AAA Overview

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulging or ballooning of the aorta caused by weakening of the vessel wall. The wall of the aorta can become weak due to age, disease, or trauma. As the bulge grows, the wall of the aorta becomes weaker. This condition, if left untreated, could cause the aorta to rupture, leading to serious internal bleeding, or death.
